Equiptment & Props list

Equipment

2x Digital Video Cameras - The reason I am using to cameras is because it means that I can record the scene from two different positions at the same time.

2x Tripods - I will be using two tripods for the two cameras

Computer - This will be used to edit and add special effects to my music video.

Sony Vegas Pro- The actual software, which will allot me to edit my camera footage and create the music video.

Speaker - I will be using a loud speaker so that my actors can keep in time with the song. It will also allow the main artist to easily mime to the music.

Car - To move to the different filming locations

Mobile Phone - This will be used to connect to the speaker and play The Lazy Song for the actors to hear and perform to.

Go Pro - For some scenes I think it would be good to have the main artist filming him self for this I need an action camera as they may be doing activities which would be hard to film on a normal camera.

Selfie Stick - This equipment will allow the main artist to film himself using the Go Pro as it can attach to the end of this stick.

Props

Animal Masks (bear, fox, monkey, pug) - These will be for the back dancers to wear during the video. These masks add a bit of humour to the video as well as concealing the actors identity.

Glasses - These are for the main artist who will be using these to add to his chilled look.

Brightly Coloured Clothing - The back dancers will be wearing bright clothing so that the
video a happy upbeat feeling to go with the music.

Mobile Phone - This will be used during one of the main choruses, where the main artist
throws his phone away, which links to the lyrics of the song.

Locations List

Donnington Castle - I want to use this iconic castle for a dancing scene. My dancers and monkeys can be dancing on the ruins or in front of the castle. I think this would be a really interesting location to film on and intrigue the audience.

Lonleat Centre Parks - This location would be great for filming the characters doing various activities like swimming or climbing. I will not be able to use a normal camera due to the risk of it being damaged. Instead I hope to use an action camera such as the GoPro to record.

Back garden trampoline - This will be used to film a seen of the animals jumping on the trampoline having a good time. I think this will be good to use at some points between the main chorus. I will need to ensure that all of my actors are careful whilst are the trampoline, such as making sure there aren't too many on there at the same time, which could  potentially make it unsafe.

Slanting Hill Forest - The forest and woods would be a good background for the main artist and back dancers to do a dance routine. I also plan on having the animals hide behind tree as they try to catch my main artist.

Northcroft Hill - I hope to potentially use this for the main chorus, as it is a grassy area where i could have all the actors lying on the ground miming the song. However because it is on a hill we wouldn't be able to go if it had been recently raining due it possibly be very muddy and slippy.

River Kennet - Down the River Kennet, just outside the town centre there is a canal lock, which I
think would be a good location to use as another scene for my characters to do a dancing scene. However there a various hazards with being so close to the canal. For instance I would have to be very careful with the filming equipment, as well as ensuring the crew are safe and dont get too close to the canal.

Intertextuality in music videos

What is intertextuality?

Intertextuality is where popular cultures or media texts are referenced to in different media texts. Directors use previously existing texts because they are recognisable to the audience.

Imagine Dragons - On Top Of The World

In this music video there is a clear reference to the famous image of The Beatles crossing in 1969. This is a very small clip in the video, but is there to catch the eye of the audience for humorous effect.

Robbie Williams - You Know Me

In this music video Robbie Williams is dressed as a white rabbit in a brown suite, with the location being very easily to relate to 'Alice in wonderland' which is a very famous story with a number of films. There are constant references to it ranging from Robbie's costume of a rabbit with a cane just like the rabbit in the story. The biggest reference was to MGM's famous lion credit, which instead of a lion had a rabbit.

Taylor Swift - Love Story
Link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xg3vE8Ie_E
This song contains various lyrics from Romeo and Juliet such as "pulled out a ring and said marry me Juliet". Similar scenes that viewers will be able to link to Romeo and Juliet through the use of scenes like the castle, the wood and a ball. Romero and Juliet is a love story which is known universally, through referencing to this love story this video is reaching a wider audience to familiarise with the song.

Analyses of music videos

Imagine Dragons - Radioactive

Link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktvTqknDobU

The Genre of this song is indie rock, electronic rock and alternative rock.

The artists are seen  in a dungeon, which potentially shows them as 'prisoners' or portrays them as 'weak'. However through out the video the main artists is seen repeatedly smashing a drum showing his anger and strength. The main driver of the video is female actress Alexandra Daddario who is well known from the film series Percy Jackson which may help to promote the video. Her character is very similar to the character she plays in the film series as she is shown as very fearless and strong. This is a counter type as women are generally seen as being inferior and weak.

This music video has a very strong link with its visuals and the lyrics the lead sing is always hitting the drum in time with the music. The artists  also breathe in and out when the song stops and starts. For the majority of the video the band members are lip syncing, helping the video link together with the lyrics.

Radioactive keeps true to a stereotypical indie music video as it has very dull, dark moody colours, however it does contain bright colours which take shape of the soft toys, which are the main focus of the video.

OneRepublic - Counting Stars

Camerawork

One of the very first shots is a close-up of the main artist's back which tracks him as he slowly walks away from the camera. The slow pace of this scene creates tension because the audience is unable to see the front of the artists and what he's walking towards. Due to the low angles shot the artist looks superior to the audience and shows he has authority. The video then quickly cuts to two establishing shots, which show this dirty and mysterious building which they are in to set the scene.

Editing

This music video is filled with jump cuts between people in the religious group and the artists. These close-ups allow us to see all of the different characters in the video as well as their facial expressions. The religious is shown to be very excited or slightly possessed.

Mise en scene

Many of the characters are wearing dark clothing, which adds the mysterious feel of the video. At one point characters are dancing in one of the rooms of the buildings. This is quite common in pop genre videos.

Rihanna - Rude Boy

This is a concept based video and performance based video. This is because it is slightly unusual and doesn't really have a story line and consists of the artists performing various dance sequences. This song would be put in the dancehall genre category.

Camera Work

For the majority of the video the camera remains still, however there are a few close ups of Rhiannas
body parts, which could be linked to objectification. This is where the camera is focusing on certain body parts to arouse male viewers.

Editing

The video mainly consists of fast paced editing, which keeps the video flowing at a face pace to go with the lyrics of the song. This video also contains alot of green screen editing to implement special effects, where various words and images appear making the video more concept based. Many of these words once again objectify the main artist such as "Want, Want, Want" and "Boom, Boom, Boom".

Mise en Scene

Rhianna is dressed in very minimal clothing  which shows a lot of skin, this is quite common in her videos as it attracts male viewers. This shows her as a powerful and strong character, this is also supported with the constant references of her riding a lion. The lighting and colours of the video are very bight, which suggests youth and helps to capture the audiences attention.

Representation

The main artist is objectified sexually through out the video to capture generally male attention. The use of bright colours and mainly yellow red and black link it to Caribbean culture. This is also shown through the types of clothes she wears throughout the video.

Narratives and Themes

The narrative consists of little deep meaning, and is the theme is mainly sex. This can be seen by the constant references with words in the background, as well as the actions of the characters within the video.
